What is a GPA at Dalhousie?

At Dalhousie, a Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted average of your grades across courses, expressed on a 4.3 scale. Each letter grade (A+, A, A-, etc.) corresponds to a specific grade point value (e.g., A+ = 4.30, B = 3.00, F = 0.00). The GPA shows your overall level of academic performance and is used by the university to measure progress toward your degree, eligibility for academic awards, and standing requirements.

What types of GPAs does Dalhousie use?

Dalhousie recognizes two main types of GPAs:

  • Term GPA – This includes only the courses from a single term, allowing you to track your performance over that semester.
  • Cumulative GPA (CGPA) – This includes all credit courses attempted at Dalhousie after admission. Your CGPA is the number most often used for academic standing decisions, graduation requirements, and entrance into programs such as Honours or Co-op.

Some faculties may also look at a Program GPA, which applies only to courses within your specific degree or program.

How do I find my current GPA at Dal?

Students can find their official GPA by logging into Dal Online:

  1. Go to dal.ca/online.
  2. Select “Web for Students.”
  3. Navigate to Student Records → Academic Record → View Your Transcript.
  4. Your transcript will show both your Term GPA and Cumulative GPA.

This is the only official source of your GPA — the online GPA calculator is a useful tool for estimates, but your transcript is what the university uses for academic decisions.

How does GPA affect my standing?

Your GPA is directly tied to your academic standing at Dalhousie. For undergraduate students:

  • A strong GPA keeps you in Good Academic Standing and may qualify you for the Dean’s List or scholarships.
  • A GPA below a certain threshold may place you on Academic Probation or Academic Dismissal, depending on the severity and your faculty’s regulations.
  • Certain programs (like Honours, Co-op, or Professional Faculties) have specific GPA requirements to enter or remain enrolled.
