What is a CGPA at Carleton University?

A CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a numeric measure of your overall academic performance. At Carleton, your CGPA is calculated by dividing the total grade points earned by the total number of credits attempted for courses that count toward your degree. Carleton uses a specific grade-point scale (for example, A+ = 12.0 for a 1.0 credit, A = 11.0, A- = 10.0, etc.).

What courses are included or excluded?
  • Included: Courses that count toward your degree, including major, minor, specialization, and concentration courses.
  • Excluded: “Extra to the Degree” (ETD), “No Credit for the Degree” (NCD), forfeit courses, transfer credits (TR), courses not eligible for credit, and courses completed outside Carleton through letter of permission or exchange (except for University of Ottawa exchange).
  • Carleton’s official 12-point grade scale?

What happens if I repeat a course?

Yes. When you repeat a course at Carleton, the best grade is used in the CGPA calculation. This means your higher attempt replaces your lower grade. However, the prior attempt remains on your academic record even if it is excluded from the CGPA calculation.

How do exchange or transfer credits affect my Carleton CGPA?
  • Courses completed through the Carleton–University of Ottawa exchange are included in your CGPA.
  • Courses completed at other universities through exchange or letter of permission are not included in your CGPA.
  • Transfer credits, noted as “TR,” also do not contribute to your CGPA.
